No. We assume that when you arrive, you have no
umpiring knowledge or experience. Regardless of your experience level,
we start everyone from the basics on the first day. Often times,
extensive experience can lead to established bad habits that must be
broken first. With limited, or no, experience, you will not have these
bad habits to break before learning the "Wendelstedt Way".
Our class size varies from year to year. Though our
class size usually remains around 100 students, we will not know our
class size until January 2 because some enrolled students are unable to
report for various reasons, and some students register the last couple
of days before the start of school.
The ratio varies based on class size, however, we
have 27 staff members, 12 of them Major League umpires. We usually have
about 100 students attend every year.
We are provided with the number of placements
available on the first of February. This number usually ranges between
25 and 35, and we also send an additional 10 on a reserve list. These
students are selected throughout the year as positions become available
due to injury and retirements.
You must be at least 18 years old to attend umpire
school. Our job is to provide professional baseball with the best
possible candidates for placement into professional baseball. When you
leave our school, you leave with our label. We place the the best
students, regardless of age, gender, race, or any other factors. We
strive to keep the our reputation of providing the best possible product
on the field. If you are a top student, we want you to represent the
Wendelstedt School.
Though all of the professional umpire programs will
offer you the same material as mandated by professional baseball, our
school offers you the best opportunity to excel in baseball through our
unique presentation and exclusive teaching methods. One of the most
important of these is through the use of live games, played by high
school and college teams. We are the only program that provides you with
this opportunity. And since your placement at the PBUC placement camp is
determined solely on your performance during live games, this provides
our students with a head-start to real game situations. The results are
proved through our wonderful success over the years. Our school also
provides a better facility, location, more experienced staff, and most
importantly; better results! To see a side by side comparison of our
